On the eve of World AIDS Day last year, HIV Unwrapped took center stage at the National AIDS Memorial Grove during the annual Light in the Grove – one of the most powerful and symbolic HIV gatherings in the country. Set within the only federally designated AIDS memorial in the United States, the candlelit evening brings together community leaders, long-term survivors, scientists, artists, and advocates to honor lives lost and recommit to ending the epidemic.
Against this sacred backdrop, HIV Unwrapped introduced its bold fashion-meets-science concept to a deeply engaged audience. Select garments – each created through collaboration between emerging designers and leading HIV researchers – were presented as living works of art, worn by models who moved throughout the Grove, inviting intimate conversations about the science, symbolism, and stories woven into every stitch. The juxtaposition was powerful: cutting-edge HIV innovation showcased inside a national site of remembrance.
The moment reinforced what HIV Unwrapped stands for – transforming complex science into something people can see, feel, and connect with emotionally. By bringing contemporary design rooted in HIV research into the Grove, the project honored the past while spotlighting the progress and possibilities shaping the future. It was a meaningful milestone in HIV Unwrapped’s global journey and a vivid reminder that remembrance and innovation can share the same space – illuminated by candlelight, community, and hope.
